The Evolution of Greeting Cards

happy birthday to you

Greeting cards evolved from being sent by the Egyptians and Chinese as a way to spread goodwill, to being sent in observance of holidays. Unfortunately, they were handmade and not everyone was able to afford the luxury of sending a card because they were very expensive.

Sending a greeting card increased in popularity in the 1850s, mainly due to the invention of the postage stamp and commercial printing, thus allowing people to send birthday cards and many other cards, all around the world.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that birthday cards are the only greeting cards that are sent. Thanks to Hallmark and American Greetings, which are the two major greeting card manufacturers, there are cards to fit every occasion, along with various themes and illustrations to enjoy. They range from thank you, get well, holidays and anything else that you can come up with allowing for a huge selection, thus ensuring you will find exactly what you want or need.

Remember when you were young and you handmade those cards that your mom loved simply because you made them? That is still an option today. With the increase in the popularity of craft supply stores, it has become fairly easy to make your own cards that look quite professional. Now you can say “happy birthday to you” in several different ways. You can purchase the scrapbook style card-making supplies at almost any store and they have so many themes available you will find out least one, and probably several that you just have to have; all of which will convey your special birthday greeting.

Have you ever gone on the internet and typed in “greeting cards” in a search engine? It is amazing just how many sites offer some type of electronic greeting options available for you to send. They offer many different types of sentiments, such as sweet and sappy or funny and sarcastic, to name a few. The sheer number of these sites is amazing and while some do offer to send the greeting cards for free, others charge for this service. Or, they may show you a selection of e cards that are free to send but if you want to send one of the nicer, more detailed cards, then you may be required to become a member with varying costs. Others will give you access to free cards if you agree to send it with their advertising.
